The new cultural axis of the city. The buildings were erected after the 1992 Olympic Games with the aim of revitalizing an area located between the Eixample district and the new 22@ technological district. The National Theatre was inaugurated in 1997; it is the work of Ricardo Bofill and was designed following the architectural lines of a classical building.

Close by is the Auditorium, another building complex, which was designed by the prestigious architect, Rafael Moneo, and inaugurated in 1999. The building was designed as concert venue but also has a part used for teaching music. The building is characterized by its rationalist, sober lines, with a large central atrium crowned with a glass dome decorated with paintings by Pablo Palazuelo.
