Ciutadella – Zoo

The Parc de la Ciutadella is one of the most emblematic green spaces in the city. It was transformed for the 1888 Universal Exhibition and currently contains such emblematic buildings as the Catalan Parliament and the Ciutadella Natural Science Museum, designed by the Art Nouveau architect, Lluís Domènech i Montaner.

Following the 1888 universal exhibition, a large space was left free and was occupied by the city’s zoological gardens, which first opened to the public in 1892. The area covers 13 hectares and contains a collection consisting of more than 400 different species from all over the world, with a total of 7.500 animals.
